The Post..
I photographed a band today by the name of Look Mexico. They are signed with Suburban Home Records and reside in Tallahassee, FL. Norman from Alternative Press asked me to photograph them this week for (as far as I know) the January 2010 issue. A couple days ago, I met up with and photographed another band for them named Honor Bright, which should be in the same issue. Anyway, the shoot with Look Mexico was supposed to take place on the 16th, the night of their show at the Social here in Orlando. Buuuut, some slight issues regarding their veggie oil/diesel engine bus kept them from arriving on time so we arranged for it to get done in the morning. It worked out because the Orlando Magic had a game at the same time and the weather was very unpleasant. We met up right by the venue. We were once again delayed because I made the mistake of locking my keys in my car along with everything else. Luckily I had already taken out my camera so the time spent waiting for pop-a-lock was filled with the discovery of a better location. The time difference between my equipment being accessible again and the band arriving was short so there wasn’t too much sitting around. To make a long story short, we did the shoot and got what we needed.
So, here is the before and after. Take a look, see what has been done and I’ll leave a little description of the steps I took to get the final product.

Step by Step:
- Uploaded to computer via Adobe Lightroom 2
- RAW adjustments made (click here to view screen shot) and then exported into Photoshop CS4 to continue editing
- Used the clone and stamp tools to clean up the photo
- Various curve adjustments to brighten the image, lighten skin tones and bring out detail in shadows. As well as using curve adjustments to darken jeans and other details
- Saved
Here is some other information regarding some EXIF data and lighting:
- Canon 5D with a Canon 25-105mm f/4.0
- ISO 160, f/4.0, 1/100
- 1 AB800 shot through a medium softbox to camera right and above
- Triggered w/ CyberSyncs
Overall, I am very pleased with the shoot and the turnout of the final images. I didn’t want to over do it. Especially with a band that has such a solid, indie-rock sound. Also, to let everyone know who is already not aware, the image you see in this post is simply an extra/out take from the shoot. The image being printed with the issue will only be in that issue. I hope that covers anything anyone may wonder.. I’d rather not touch on the minor details and let you guys figure that out on your own, its much better that way.
Well take care and I hope everyone is enjoying their time off for the holidays. Although, there are a lot of us who don’t really have “time off” but its all in spirit. Keep an eye out for more news which I unfortunately have to keep holding off on announcing but I’m sure a lot of you will take great interest in what’s to come.
Until next time,
Gage
